Ramping up some of his typically favorite racially charged rhetoric, geared specifically for the audience to which he was speaking, something he has always been quite good at, Barry made sure to highlight the usual themes of civil rights and social justice. It was in a speech this past Saturday, that Barry made the point that until the U.S. becomes a place where anyone who is willing to work hard can earn a way into the middle class "we can't let up and we can't rest." In making references to those who want to work, Barry may have been speaking to the wrong crowd here. And what Barry managed to leave out of his little attempt at pandering to this primarily black crowd, was the rather inconvenient truth that black unemployment has literally exploded during his tenure as president, having now worked its way well into double digits.
"We can't rest until we offer new ladders of opportunity for anyone willing to climb them," Barry said in a keynote address to the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Foundation's annual awards dinner. "Over the last 30 years, upward mobility in this country — the idea that if you work hard, you can get ahead — has slipped out of reach for too many Americans. And that's especially true in communities with large African-American populations." But again, Barry failed to mention, and it matters very little whether intentional or not, that the primary reason that that is now even the case, has an awful lot to do with the policies that he himself has put into place. The black community has been made to suffer greatly under the supposed leadership of our own black president. His policies have made it nearly impossible for our economy to actually grow.
Barry hewed to the theme of the dinner, which this year celebrated the "Spirit of 1963," including the civil rights movement and the March on Washington for Jobs and Justice led 50 years ago at the Lincoln Memorial by Martin Luther King Jr., and the advances it brought about for black Americans. Topping the list of achievements is Barry's election in 2008 as America's first black president. To be honest with you, I’m still more than a little confused regarding just why it is that the black community can actually view the electing to this particular black president as being an accomplishment that you’re average black American can rightfully be proud of. Is it truly all about nothing more than color, that, in effect, any black president will do? If that is in fact the case, is that not the height of stupidity?
Without talking about himself, which is something of a rare occasion for this president, Barry acknowledged progress made since 1963, but said there was more to be done. He spoke of work needed to reduce a black unemployment rate that is twice that of whites, increase the minimum wage and provide health care and education for all. "We must make this country a place where anyone who works hard can earn their way into the middle class," Barry told hundreds of his most ardent supporters packed into the Washington's convention center. "And until we do, we can't let up and we can't rest." But what he neglected to mention was his continuing to stubbornly refuse to let up on his war against those who comprise our small business community, the sector of our economy that creates the majority of jobs for blacks and whites.
Barry also took the opportunity to sound a note of caution about recent mass shootings, including at the Navy Yard in Washington last Monday where authorities say 12 people were slain by a gunman who later was killed by police. Two days ago in Barry's hometown, the murder capital of the country, of Chicago, 13 people were shot during a game of pickup basketball, including a 3-year-old girl. Barry, of course, again lamented the failure earlier this year to get gun legislation through the Senate and said "that means we've got to get back up and go back at it" to work harder than those he said want to make it easier for people to get firearms. He added, "We've got to work as hard as possible for the sake of our children."
Barry "Almighty" is scheduled to speak today, Sunday, at a memorial service for victims of the Washington shooting. An occasion I’m sure he will do his politically best to exploit to the greatest extent possible. And I’m sure, as with the Newtown tragedy, we’ll soon be hearing from many other Democrats who, I’m also quite sure, will be quite thrilled that the incident was so horrific, making it all the easier to be exploited to the fullest. Because this is the way Democrats work. They are determined in their efforts to deceive, distract and destroy. But hey, all that really matters is that we have a black president. We may have sky-high unemployment, an unfathomable amount of debt, an economy on the brink, and a world about to descend into a level of chaos unseen in recent years, but at least America has a black president.
